As the sole Community Manager on Video Horror Society, I aided in building and defining the community early on following the announcement of the closed Beta.
My contributions include:
-
Being a key voice of the Video Horror Society community on Twitter, Discord, Steam, and via monthly DevNotes
-
Collecting and delivering feedback to the team through clear and consistent interdepartmental communication
-
Ideating and working with Design to build a Community hub on the Video Horror Society website
-
Building, executing, and recruiting for the Be Kind & Rewind creator program
-
Writing and conveying the importance of the Hellbent Games Social Media Policy to the team
Communication is key
It's not enough to give the players what they want - communicating intentions and acknowledging pain-points is just as important. Players want to feel heard, and this is exactly what I aim to address when writing DevNotes monthly and for our large milestones. These blog posts are then shared across all of our social channels to reach as much of our community as possible.
All available DevNotes can be found on the Hellbent Games Medium Page!
Community Hub
My first goal when joining the Hellbent teams was to create a space for our community to celebrate their love for Video Horror Society, and to eventually house our Be Kind & Rewind creator program.
The initial hub would consist of
-
Cosplay guides put together by our Character Art team, as well as downloadable PDF versions
-
HD wallpapers created by our Media Producer
-
A fanart section to celebrate our community artists
Working closely with the Design and Website team, I provided mockups for reference of what I was envisioning, and watched as they brought the Community Hub to life!
Be Kind & Rewind Creator Program
With passionate creators, we wanted to keep that momentum going. When building the outline of the Be Kind & Rewind program, we aimed to keep community at the forefront by finding creators that matched our core values.
So that we're able to continue fostering the kind and positive community that we worked so hard to build, we removed any analytical requirements that would discourage creators from applying if they are under a specific viewer/follower/sub threshold. This doesn't mean to say that we only select affiliates for our program - but we also don't limit entry to Partners only! It means that we aim to find a balance between smaller and larger content creators so that we can meet KPIs while simultaneously inviting our Rewinders to grow with us!
Diversity and inclusivity are an important part of any program, and there is always opportunity to grow and learn in these particular areas. Reaching out to Brown Girl Gamer Code for consultation and feedback, I was able to further ensure that our values as a studio, and in-game, carried over to our creator program.
